Wallingford’s Large Dig

  • Post author:

Tipster Sara turned us on to what could be the most colossal, earth-shaking construction project this side of the Big Dig. How do we know it’s big? Well, just listen to what it’s called:

Large Neighborhood Street Fund

It’s right there in the name. Large. And Large it is. The city is going to invest $6 million citywide for new sidewalks at schools, sidewalk repair, better lighting in business districts and slowing speeders, and Wallingford stands to gain from the city’s largess. Now, granted, $6 million is only .000012% of what Bernie Madoff embezzled, but it’s also 600,000x my allowance at age 10. That would have bought a lot of Wacky Packs.

Or, in this case, a lot of new sidewalks and trees. The map to the right illustrates the impact. No block untouched! Sara and the stroller set rejoice at the new cut curbs!

It’s scheduled to start February 9th and last 4 – 5 weeks, so bust out your lawn chairs and your coolers!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
