Consume This Blog Post

Wallyhood stopped in at Wide World Books and Maps for one of their travel talks, and had the opportunity to chat afterwards with Rick, one of the founders of Wallingford’s own Friday Night at the Meaningful Movies.

He let us know that this coming Friday night’s installment is special, the 6th anniversary of the event. They’ll be getting a cake to celebrate. (And little did we know that this whole time, Julia’s has been donating their leftover pastries and goodies. If we had known there were yummies to be had, we would have made it over earlier.)

This week’s showing is Consume This Movie, a “shop-u-mentary” with Cecile Andrews:

Are Americans too materialistic? Are we willfully trashing the planetary ecology in order to serve the desires and drives of the ego? And what, or who could be driving this powerful force of seduction?

Americans are finally beginning to challenge our culture of greed and materialism. CONSUME THIS MOVIE stars Cecile Andrews, Juliet Schor, Peter Whybrow and others; and takes a critical look at social injustice, peak oil, resource depletion and our deep need to feel connected to each other through what we choose to consume.

Cecile, a pioneer in the “slow” movement, author of Slow is Beautiful and founder of the Phinney EcoVillage, will lead the discussion afterwards. And now, embedded for you viewing pleasure, the trailer:

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
