It’s flooding…comic books!

Andrew posted a note to Twitter on Thursday:

Comics Dungeon has a bunch of boxes outside and a sign on the door saying “Store Flooded!”

So this Saturday, we loaded L’il Z into his Baby Bjorn carrier, donned our cub reporter outfit and headed up there to get the scoop.

Manager Chris gave us the bad news: someone (perhaps an upstairs tenant) left a hose running against the back of the building overnight. When they arrived in the morning, the place had a river of water marching from the back wall towards the front. Boxes and boxes of comics stored in boxes on the floor were ruined (no word yet on what insurance will cover). Ugh, our heart goes out to them.

On the bright side, we did learn from Chris that Saturday, May 2nd will be Free Comic Books Day.

No way, there is such a thing?

Yah, for real! Once a year, all the comic publishers run huge extra runs of popular comics, reprints of old comics, teaser comics for upcoming events (e.g., the Wolverine movie) and sell them to comic book shops all over the country for super cheap. The shops then give them away (most shops limit to 1 or 2 / customer, Comics Dungeon will lavish six on you). They encourage you to go around the city to all different shops to get one of each.

We’ll repost closer to the time, but you’d better start thinking about what costume you’re going to wear, now.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
