Pequeña Havana

Monday’s plea to relocate Lunchbox Laboratory to Wallingford generated quite a bit of discussion (but, alas, no offer from Ballard to help LL move into that perfect spot the Loki Cafe has vacated). Hidden among the comments was Jason’s revelation that SeaMonster is now serving Cuban sandwiches. Inspired, Doug consulted The Google and found the chef’s blog, Pequeña Havana, where Angela, the chef, announced that they are open now, serving food between 9 pm and 2 am, including:

Mariquitas [] The “Cuban potato chips”- Thinly sliced plantain chips served with Mojo Criollo

Pollo Asado : Cuban roasted chicken marinated in garlic, lime & orange juice, and house-special marinade sauce

Sandwich Cubano : Authentic Cuban style sandwich, roasted pork and ham slices pressed with Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on French bread

Frita Cubana : Cuban seasoned ground-beef burger, with shoestring fries and onion served on a hamburger bun

SeaMonster Under ConstructionMy God, people, do you realize what this means? Dinner served after 9 pm? Why, it could reshape the culinary landscape of the Pacific Northwest!

Enthralled (and needing to run a complete separate errand in the same direction), we shot up to see for ourselves what the story was. We found, as reported, construction under way (pictured), but were told that despite the carpentry, SeaMonster is indeed open and serving food every night.

Foodies, what’s the word?

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Watch out for those plantain chips. They’re good, but they have significantly more fiber than, say, your average corn chip.

Exciting for the ‘hood, though it’s sadly lacking in vegetarian entree options. How about some frijoles negros con arroz?

This is a classy pork-lovers paradise (even though they also have beef, chicken & seafood). You can’t beat the preparation either, especially of the Platanos Maduros (fried sweet plantain with melted swiss cheese). A great addition to the neighborhood, Latin or otherwise!
