Sounds from the ‘Hood

I produce a weekly show based around Northwest music & stories (past & present) called “The Seaport Beat” on HER every Wednesday from 10am-Noon.  I am collecting sounds, interviews, & music for an upcoming show that will be based on my neighborhood, Wallingford. I want to get suggestions about field recordings that I should capture from Wallingford (i.e. sounds that keep you up at night, the woodpecker that has stationed itself in your backyard, the neighbor who plays bagpipe at dawn everyday, the 26 bus that rolls by your house every 15 minutes, the kitchen sounds of a particular restaurant, etc). I am also looking to interview people about interesting Wallingford-based stories.  And, lastly, if you are a musician & you have recorded music, please drop it on our front porch of the HER studio at 4054 Latona Ave NE & label it WALLINGFORD MUSIC SUBMISSION!

If all goes well, and I am able to collect enough material for the show within the next month, I will air the neighborhood show July 15th, 2009 from 10am-Noon PST.

We would like to nominate the sound of the John Stanford International School’s end-of-period bell (which is followed by the cheerful screams of children being let out to play) as well as the odd, Brazil-esque drone of the JSIS PA-announcements.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

My gentle alarm clock is the soft clucking of my neighbor’s hens (corner of Corliss and 43rd) after they’ve laid another egg – a quintessential Wallingford sound!

The flicker at the top of the telephone pole on the corner of 39th and Burke, right around dawn most mornings.

One of my favorite Wallingford sounds is the gleeful sound of people sledding down Kite Hill while the rest of the neighborhood is quietly nestled inside their homes. Will there be similar sounds from the kite flying this weekend? I bet something just as pleasant!

I didn’t pay much attention to this before we had our son, but there always seems to be some airplane noise in the background. Usually a dull roar of a jet heading for SeaTac, but occasionally a louder, low-flying sea plane.
