Kayak Opportunity

  • Post author:

You’ve got a once in a blue moon opportunity this weekend: a chance to quietly paddle the Arboretum.

Now sure, we hear you asking, “but can’t I rent a canoe or kayak any weekend and paddle around the Arboretum?” Yes, you can, but you’ll always been listening to that constant dull roar of 520 in the background.

As luck would have it, 520 will be closed from 11 pm Friday through 5 am Monday, and while that roaring monster slumbers, you can enjoy the relative peace and quiet and on the water. Years ago, we found it a bit eerie, sort of post-apocalyptic.

Canoe and kayak rentals available at Agua Verde or the UW’s Waterfront Activity Center (open to the general public).

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Thank you so much for suggesting this! We moved here just a little over 2 years ago, and have been meaning to go rent a canoe ever since, but just haven’t gotten around to it. So we took you up on your suggestion and got a canoe from UW this afternoon and paddled around in idyllic silence. It was wonderful!
