Host “Obama Boy” – Host Family Urgently Needed!

  • Post author:

Jill sent this earlier today and hoped it would be posted immediately, but we’re just getting around to reading our mail:

A group of 15 French high school students are coming to Seattle for a 3-week cultural exchange on Thursday, July 30 (yes, that’s tomorrow!) All but one of the students are placed. I saved the best for last thinking that he would just stay with us. But alas, we live in a brick house with no insulation, and hosting a student during this heat wave would be inhumane. The interior of the house has been a steady 88 – 100+ degrees. This poor kid would have to sleep on the deck!

Pierre “Obama Boy” will be here July 30 – Aug 19. Can you host for even part of his visit?

Pierre writes to his future host family:

Dear Family,

My name is Pierre, I’ve sixteen years old. I live in Saint-Nagaire in France.

In first time, I’d like to thanks your for your welcome. Now, I talk to my life. I like sports in particularly handball and karate but my favorite in USA is a baseball. With my friends, we play often video games and if there are a good weather we go to play soccer. I live in a house with my parents theirs name are Patrick and Felice. I see my grandparents often because they live in the same city. I’m happy and optimistic because it’s my nature. This trip enjoyed me because its a very good experience for my english because I speak very bad and write worse. It’s interesting too for discover on other activities, and way of life. I like USA for her diversity, and history because history is my favorite subject. In finally, I talk to recent new, a election of Barack Obama. On my point of view, I think it’s very good, his election bring revival for USA, the first black president. I find Obama invest for USA maybe is a impression. But my favorite president is Lincoln (his history is impressionant). One more time I’d like to thanks for your welcome. See you later.

Pierre.

Despite stating that his English is poor, I find his letter to be very readable. He has been speaking English for 6 years and Spanish for 4. He is very well-traveled (Thailand, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, etc.) He describes himself as polite, sociable, friendly, open, optimistic, calm, adaptable and responsible.

The kids will have 8 planned group activities throughout their stay (potentially more). I will outfit them with maps, Metro passes, and ideas for fun things to do so they can explore on their own and stay busy if/while their host families are at work.

And again, once the temperature drops a bit (even into the high 70s or low 80s), I should be able to take him in… unless of course, you fall in love with him and want to keep him for the full 3 weeks! 🙂 I’m very anxious to hear from you. Please call me ASAP! 206.229.6930.

Thanks so much,
Jill

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
