Weekend Report

My Green Lake reports that Milk Carton Derby was a big success:

Most notably, 500 pounds of food and $500 was donated to Northwest Harvest. It was a bit windy out (though talk about luck with the weather considering today’s rain) so we found it most exciting to watch the boats battle to stay behind the starting line until “Ready! Set! Go!”

From the looks of it, there were some great floats afloat:

Unfortunately, we couldn’t attend the Kiddie Parade, but based on our read of Twitter and these photos, it looks like we missed out:

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Kiddie Parade OMG: I foolishly scheduled a 12:00 appointment that meant I could only see a little bit of the parade. I got to see the Hamilton MS marching band, a couple pre-schools and — my favorite — at least one surly-teenage-girls’ drill team. In my hurry to get my evil dog out of the crowd, I walked south of 45th and came back north on Woodlawn. Between 44th and 45th, I got to witness a drill team smackdown! They all ended up there, and in the most orderly way, did their routines one after another, and I didn’t even get to see the other teams that were pouring into the street. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven! Forget the judging stand at 45th and Wallingford, I’ll definitely be watching from 45th & Woodlawn next year!

I agree, Janey, that was the best part of the parade…..but it is called a salute, not a smackdown……the girls congratulate/salute each other, and demonstrate their skills. They are representing, and they are serious about it, but it is not a confrontation. My daughter is on one of the drill teams…..GO NORTHSIDE!
