Tour de FatLots going on in Wallingford this weekend. Here’s a quick rundown of things we haven’t yet mentioned elsewhere:

  • Tour de Fat: New Belgium Brewing Co is hosting a bicycle / beer festival (they insist the bicycle comes first) at Gas Works Park on Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm. It begins with an hour-long bicycle parade and is followed by a series of bands (Sean Hayes, The Pimps of Joytime, Handsome Little Devils present: Squirm Burpee Circus, Nanda, Portland’s Original Mini-Bike Dance Troupe: The Sprockettes, Loyd Family Players Salsa Drum Corps). We know this because our neighbors are putting up members of the Salsa Drum Corps on their couch.
  • Summer Splashtacular: The Parks and Recs department are sponsoring pool-related activities all over town. At Wallingford Playfield (Wallingford Ave and 42nd St N), the city will be providing water toys and activities on Saturday from 1 – 4 pm.
  • Sustainable Wallingford Croquet and Family Picnic: Says they: “Enjoy a lovely evening potluck, playing croquet with people of all ages. Meet new friends and sustainable neighbors. Wear white or elegant clothing. We’ve got just one croquet set. RSVP if you have another! Bring potluck food and your own plates and cutlery, and we’ll provide the drinks.” Saturday, 4 – 8 pm at Meridian Park by the Good Shepherd Center.
  • Seattle Peace Concerts: On Sunday from noon to 6 pm, Gas Works will host the Seattle Peace Concerts, featuring Mia Dyson, Alex Duncan, Randy Oxford Band, Red Hot Blues Sisters, Padam Padam, and Yogi & Yogini’s

There you are. Get on your bike, get drunk, get wet and play croquet. And that’s just on Saturday.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
