A Community Project: Auction Donations Wanted

Seniors

We’ve been touched with the way so many have rallied around the Wallingford Community Senior Center. When you think that, forty, fifty or more years ago, many of the seniors it serves were fixing up the houses we’re living in and sending their kids off to the schools we’re now renovating, you can feel how each generation carries the community on, then passes the mantle to the next.

We want to do our bit to thank them and care for them now, when they’re vulnerable again. To that end, Wallyhood would like to host a fundraiser auction, with all proceeds to go to the Senior Center, in the hopes of keeping it alive for the hundreds of seniors who have come to depend on it to stay healthy in mind and body.

So what are we going to auction off? Well, that’s where we turn to you: we’re soliciting donations from the Wallingford community (and beyond) of items and services that you’re willing to donate to help our senior center stay open. While anything is welcome, I think it would be nice to get things that come from Wallingford. For example:

  • Eggs from Wallingford chickens delivered to your door
  • Preserves from your Wallingford plum tree
  • Dinner for two at a Wallingford restaurant
  • Massage from a Wallingford masseuse

You get the idea. So, what say ye, dear community? Use the form below to submit your donation, we’ll kick it off next week with what we’ve pulled together.

In the event the Senior Center is not able to re-open, all donations will be given to FamilyWorks.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

By what date are the items needed?

The auction will close by Thanksgiving (although if people like the idea, I could imagine doing another one for the winter holidays). I’m hoping I can connect the buyer / donator for the hand-off directly.

Do you have a date set for the auction? Is it an online auction?

  4. Wallyhood

Yep, on-line auction. I hope to launch it Monday, but we can add new items as we go.
