Halloween Wrap-up

  • Post author:

It sounds like everyone had a great Halloween. Kara from the Wallingford Chamber says Wallingford businesses had their best year yet, Hive Mind Halloween saw over 1,300 people come through and raised over $24,000 for Room to Read and Youngstown, and we saw kids out trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, just like they did back in our day, before people started believing the only safe place to go was the mall.

In case you missed it, Paul Dorpat took photos and documented Flip Wells’ always-amazing haunted house by NE 42nd St and Eastern, complete with murdered campers, a giant crawling spider and vomiting Al Gore.

Finally, Matt Mason of MTM Photography took some great shots of all the Wallingford goings on, including the Halloween Hoopla, Wallingford Center trick or treating, the Thriller dancers and the YWCA benefit at Selena:

I can’t believe it’s only once per year.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Wow, glad to hear it went so well for so many. We didn’t have a *single* trick or treater this year (we usually get at least five or six), and all of our friends also recounted a steep decline. We wondered if it was the H1N1 bugaboo or something.

Very nice pictures! Looks like everyone had a great Halloween. It is sad taking down all of the decorations.

We had a steady stream of trick or treaters.
    Interesting costumes.
One of the neighborhood girls came as a Christmas Tree! Lots of vampires and “Star Wars”-types. The lucky ones were the 4 girls that came by as I was unplugging the lights out front (to show we were closed for business) – they got the rest of the bowl of candy!

I’d guess we got about double the number of kids we usually get (i.e., 20-25), which was delightful. Besides candy, we had grown “mini-pumpkins” in our garden this year, and gave them out to any interested young ‘uns.

Also, we were delighted to see some kids trick-or-treating for Unicef. Haven’t seen this in years (in fact, since the Dark Ages when we used to collect for them.)

yes, the haunted house was so spectacular! we walked by saturday morning as things were getting set up and my son was so excited when we saw it in full gory (leaving out the “l” on purpose). although he and his treater buddies were only 3 and 4 yrs old, they went bonkers for it. the little girl with us crawled inside the tent to inspect the campers herself. thanks so much to flip and the gang!
