Art and Olives

We found a few interesting sales going on in homes around the neighborhood this weekend. The sun shining so warmly, it’s well worth the walk to stroll over.

photo.jpgAt her home on 4033 Eastern Ave N, Rena is selling her home cured olives and spices. The olives themselves are brought fresh in a barrel from Israel. She opens them individually with a stone to let the brine in, then mixes them with spices and garlic, all from here garden here in Wallingford. We recommend the ones flavored with hyssop, but you should try them all. We also picked up a jar of skhug, a sharp and tangy mix of peppers, coriander, garlic and other spices. Saturday and Sunday, Dec 5 – 6, 10 am – 5 pm.

At 4315 Burke Ave N, Paul Lewing, Laurie Mortinson Lefebvre and Gay Jensen are holding an art sale as part of both the North End Arts Tour, a self-guided tour of 32 local artists around north Seattle, and the Seattle Sampling, a self-guided tour of artists home studios around the city. Paul is an accomplished tile worker and painter, Laruie’s jewelry is eye-catching, elegant and unique and Gay’s woven scarves and textiles are vibrant and smart. They’ve been holding their sale annually in the same house since 1986, but don’t wait until next year to catch it. Also worth mentioning is that the spread of munchies was the best and most varies of the lot. Sale started yesterday, continues Saturday and Sunday, Dec 5 – 6, 10 am – 5 pm.

Finally, there’s another of the North End Arts Tours stops just a few doors up the street on Burke, closer to the corner of 44th on the same side of the street, that includes paintings, watercolors and jewelry. We neglected to double-check, but assume the hours are the same.

So get on a scarf and go enjoy some sunshine, art and olives!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Awesome. We passed one of her olive fliers on 45th and meant to swing back by to write down the details. Those sound delicious.

Does anyone know if Rena is still selling olives, and if so, how to get in contact with her? I didn’t see the posting until today. Hope I’m not too late 🙂
