Help a Texan Out

We know, we know, we swore off the car prowl posts, for fear of creating the false impression that Wallingford is less safe than other neighborhoods (it’s not), but here you’ve got a traveler getting a bad impression of our little ‘hood, so maybe we can help her out. Karen writes:

Hi, I’m from TX, but I was just visiting a friend here in Wallingford for one evening.  My friend wanted to show me the city lights from Gas Works Park so we stopped by for about 15 minutes around 8PM.  In that time, my rental car had been broken into and two of my bags were taken.  It was a most unfortunate incident that I understand happens quite frequently and I of course made myself an easy victim by leaving anything in my car.  However, I thought I’d inform you because most people I’ve spoken to around the area haven’t heard of anything like this happening near the park.

I also saw one of your previous entries where some items from other car prowls were found discarded around the streets.  I don’t expect anything to be found, but there several sentimental items  were stolen that I can’t imagine the thief could pawn or use and I would appreciate being contacted if anyone by some random chance found anything lying around that could be mine.

Despite my not so positive experience, it is a beautiful area and I appreciate your blog that attempts to knit the community together 🙂 It does generally seem like an honest community that I wouldn’t be opposed to come visit again.

Best,

Karen

If you’re in the area of Gas Works and come across things that seem like that might be Karen’s, drop us a line and we’ll put you in touch.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
