Alterations and Reweaving Illness?

  • Post author:

Back in January, we noted that a note had gone up at the Alterations and Reweaving Center on 45th that it was closed due to illness. Commenters noted that Phyllis Brown, now in her 80’s, has been at it a long time and were worried that she wasn’t doing well.

Holly dropped us a note the other day asking for an update:

I came across your posting online regarding Phyllis Brown while I was searching for a way to contact her business. […] I have had no luck contacting them via phone, email, postal mail and every time I go there (even on the Monday/Tuesday they posted on the door) it is closed.  I sent a letter and heard nothing. […] Any thoughts, ideas, or knowledge about the status of Phyllis and her business?

If anyone knows how she’s doing, we’d appreciate it if you would share, and pass along our best wishes.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

I noticed when I walked past the other day that the “open Monday-Tuesday for pick-ups” piece has been crossed off the note in the window on 45th, so it looks like they are just closed for the time being. That is a little worrisome.

This is so sad — I’ve been worried for years that Phyllis was going to age out of her business. Hope she’s doing ok.

Well, maybe the slightest bit of hope: I walked by Alterations and Reweaving this Monday and saw that the open days were crossed out, but each of the notices had “Will Re-Open” written on them. I do really hope she’ll be back.

The new sign, that I saw yesterday 3/18, don’t know when or if the shop will be reopening. Phyllis has been a mainstay of the community for years. She has always done terrific work for me. I do hope she is on the mend!

I found Phyllis’ daughter’s shop in California. If you have items still in the shop, you might want to contact her daughter.
