More Yard Art

photo.jpgWe were peddling up Wallingford Ave the other day, dragging our tow of delicious Essential Bakery dumpster-diver bread when we noticed this beauty towering over the sidewalk. The beauty we’re referring to is the the piece of art, not the artist, Marvin Oliver, standing next to it (who’s not bad-looking, mind you, but not as stunning as his work).

The piece is suggestive of an oil drill, perhaps, pulling power and myth from the earth. The images on the side, we were told, are modeled on petroglyphs that were found in the Columbia River Basin before they were submerged by dams.

Take a tour of our neighborhood art gallery, this stop between N 37th St and N 38th on Wallingford Ave.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Marvin is an amazing artist and I am delighted to find out he lives in our neighborhood! It makes me love Wallingford/Greenlake even more!

I get my hair cut across the street and when I first saw the sculpture, I thought it was a giant hummingbird feeder full of nectar! Upon closer inspection, I realized a) I may need glasses; and b) it was truly an amazing work of art.
