Bikes for Books

  • Post author:

Baby Z seems to have acquired his first obsession, and it’s the bike (or, as he refers to it, “by-KAH”). It is his first, murmured mantra in the morning (“by-kah, by-kah, by-kah”…eyes slowly open), the punctuation to his daily walks (yes, you are correct little man, that is a bike) and, no doubt, the stuff of his dreams.

It is unfortunate, then, that he may still be too young to deliver an oral book report to a librarian (unless, perhaps, the book concerned a certain two-wheeled transport, and his declarative could be restricted to a nominal exploration of the book’s protagonist).

Children are invited to read books for a chance to win a bike. The Seattle Public Library will host the “Bikes for Books” reading program, which runs from Thursday, April 1 to Thursday, June 3. A celebration and prize drawing will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the Fremont Branch, 731 N. 35th St.

“Bikes for Books” is open to children in first through third grade. Participants are allowed to enter their names for the drawing once for every three books they read between April 1 and June 3. Each entry will require a short oral book report to a librarian. One girl and one boy each will win a bike, helmet and lock. Winners must be present to collect their prizes. All participants will receive certificates of accomplishment.

“Bikes for Books” is sponsored by the Masonic Doric Lodge No. 92 in Fremont. The goal of the program is to inspire children to read. For more information, call the Fremont Branch at 206-684-4084.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
