Free and Cheap Eats Day

  • Post author:

Let’s take the freebie tour of Wallingford, shall we?

We’ll start with a free pastry at Starbucks (before 10:30 am, print the coupon or show the barista a copy on your mobile phone). Timed, perhaps, to coincide with the Starbuck’s annual shareholder’s meeting Wednesday?

A fine breakfast, but now it’s time for some lunch. How about Ivar’s? Perfect, because they’re celebrating the 105th birthday of their “flounder”, Ivar Haglund. Buy one entree, say “Happy Birthday, Ivar” and you’ll get a second entree for 105 cents. That’s a $1.05 for the math challenged. This one tends to be quite popular, so they advise making reservations if you’re coming for a sit-down meal.

Now, perhaps a little dessert is in order? Well, let’s head up to Green Lake’s Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop for a free ice cream cone. This annual free ice cream day is a throwback to the good old days, before they started adding carageenan and guar gum to their ice cream, and before they were bought by Unilever (who also own Slim-Fast).

(Thanks KaraScene for wrapping this up for us)

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Mmmm, I love a little mechanical advantage with my frozen dairy food product.
