Old Tweedy, New Tenant

The old Tweedy & Popp store has decloaked. There are now big color posters in the windows with pictures of oriental rugs. One of them reads, “Heirloom Rugs.” I dunno if that’s the actual name of the new business. I wonder if it’ll be one of those oriental rug shops that have perpetual “Going Out Of Business Liquidation Sale!” signs but never actually close down?

Sweet. I can see it now: “Grand Opening Sale! Going Out of Business!”

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Soooo disappointing. I passed by last night. Guess I was hoping for something more…

I’m just happy that something is going in there. The large empty storefront was really ugly and a blight on the business district.

John: Seems kind of unreasonable to draw conclusions about this new retailer based on the first posters in their windows. Maybe they spent their capital on inventory and don’t have a lot for tenant improvements just yet. Or just maybe they’re only getting started on the renovations and there’s a lot more to come.

There are some very respectable carpet stores downtown on Western Ave & in Pioneer Square where we’ve found a few exceptionally beautiful rugs for our home. We should be so lucky to have a store like those in our neighborhood!

Lyqtoo: I only meant that as a light-hearted reference to a humorous and well-established cliche. No judgement or appraisal was expressed or implied. I’m very glad to see the space rented.

Remind me. Why did Tweedy and Pop lose their lease?

Per an early Wallyhood story on Tweedy & Popp’s relocation, they moved because the building’s owner wouldn’t renew their long-term lease as he intends to redevelop the building into a four-story project sometime in the next couple of years:

Of course, given the recession, those plans may be on hold.

John, your original comment was on the mark, as was Sara B’s post.

I was hoping for another ice cream shop. There just isn’t enough choice in the hood.
