Small and Simple Awards Announced

The city announced the recipients of the latest round of the Small and Simple Projects Fund, and several Wallingford projects were on the list:

  • 46th Street Mural Project: This project will build community and improve the cityscape by constructing a lasting mural to brighten this underpass, used by thousands of cars and many pedestrians every day.    It will create a neighborhood identification linking upper Fremont and Wallingford and deter crime and graffiti by partnering with community members and organizations to sponsor and participate in constructing the mural. (More info)
  • Wallingford Community Center: This project will develop a financial support model and conduct planning activity (i.e., convert completed needs analysis to design requirements) for a community center, review potential sites and develop cost projections for construction and operation.    Hold two public meetings and additional committee meetings.    Prepare and distribute a final report recommending future community course of action.    Build community by wide participation in the project.
  • Friends of McDonald School, Phase 2: Phase 2 of our project will build on our successful Phase I effort to improve the grounds of an interim elementary school, adding an ADA-accessible ramp, and depending on community preferences, more play structures, game table, and/or landscaping and possibly painting a rusty wall beneath a fence and making minor asphalt repairs.

Each of the above received approximately $10,000 – $15,000. If you’re interested in applying, visit the Neighborhood Matching Funds web site for more information. The next deadline is July 12, 2010.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
