Rocking Chair Races

  • Post author:

We passed the heat of the evening out front of Not A Number the other evening, sitting in their big “hand” chairs, chatting with Jon and Kara and amusing Baby Z with wind-up novelties.

In passing, Jon mentioned that they’re looking for volunteers to help man the Rocking Chair Races booth at the Fourth of July festivities down at Gas Works this Sunday, so we thought we’d pass it along.

light rocking chairAt first, we figured that Rocking Chair Races would mean a race track and a bunch of folks scooting their rockers down the lane, but we were corrected: they’ve got some sort of sensor set up on the chairs wired into a computer that counts rocks. Each of the six contestants rock like mad to get their score up while a huge display keeps the crowd apprised of the progress.

They’re still working out the details, and the whole thing is a fundraiser for the Wallingford Community Senior Center (which you may remember barely escaped financial insolvency earlier this year).

Rocking chair races for the senior center. You gotta give those oldsters props for a sense of humor.

E-mail [email protected] to volunteer or for more info.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Please note that this is a fund raiser for the Senior Center and the Chamber jointly. This will be a fun event for all, going on throughout the day. But it won’t happen w/o YOU!  We are still looking for volunteers. We need 8-12 people for 2 hour shifts, and if you volunteer, we’ll hold you a seat for the fireworks. If interested call/email me, or drop by our store:

We look forward to seeing you there! If  you don’t volunteer,  at least  buy a raffle ticket. We have some wonderful prizes from local area merchants.
