Oops! – Car Meets QFC

  • Post author:

Saw this in front of QFC at about 2:20 PM this afternoon:

The managers out front didn’t want to say much, only that the female driver was trying to park and kept going and ploughed into a big display of plants.  The building and pedestrians seemed undamaged.  It happened about 20 minutes before I got there.  Probably a case of hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake?  Also, this was a Disabled spot but the license isn’t disabled and I couldn’t see any tags hanging from the rear-view mirror (admittedly, it was hard to get too close):

Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

I don’t understand why they didn’t back the car back out!

Wow, breaking news indeed!  Literally!  It is a bit baffling as to how they managed enough gas to jump the curb blocker with BOTH sets of wheels.  I hope there is a good explanation, for the sake fo the driver.  Maybe like one of those crazy prius incidents where the car just wouldn’t stop accelerating…

    To Matt Jones,

If you notice in the picture the car is elevated.  Meaning the wheels are of the ground.  In other words, when an attempt to back the car up was made, the wheels just spun in the air.

@Anon: Really? The one picture that shows the front wheel shows that it is on the ground. Maybe it was just barely off the ground and so couldn’t get traction I suppose, just looked like it was touching…

    Weird… it’s not even a Toyota.

Now there’s enough room for two… what’s the problem?

I talked to the woman who was driving.  She is elderly and can only walk with a walker to hold on to.  She said to me, “I couldn’t get my foot off the gas pedal”.  They had to get a tow truck because she went over one of those concrete curbs and was sort of hung up on it.  I was tempted to say “Then it’s time for you to stop driving.” but I didn’t because she was so upset and sad.  I’m just glad no one was walking in front of her car when this happened.

How ’bout: “If you stopped driving, what kind of help would you need? I know this blog where there are lots of community-minded people.”

that’s actually not a bad idea. anyone know if there’s any kind of elderly outreach program in the ‘hood? i would love to volunteer to drive peeps to the store, etc.

I could of told you it was driven by an elderly person.  It’s a Buick.

These types of accidents invariably turn out to be old people.  I saw an old lady drive through the front of a store front in Factoria not too long ago as well.

I work across the street and went to QFC for lunch. I came out of the store to see them sweeping up the plant pots all over the ground. Then I looked up and saw the car. A little bit later the tow truck was there and she came out with her croceries. She actually went inside to shop!
