House up High

  • Post author:

If you’ve walked down the 4400 block of Thackery recently, you may have noticed a house floating above the ground. Peg offers an explanation:

I’ve had a few people tell me that my house (4400 blk of Thackeray) is looking like something out of the Wizard of Oz these days. The great design/build firm JAS (neighborhood loved and located!) is putting my house on a firmer foundation – namely a basement!!! The house – she’s 100 years old this year — and she’s getting a “lift.”

Don’t worry about the current height though — the final total gain is only about 2.5 feet.

We were actually thinking Baba Yaga, but we’ll give you Wizard of Oz.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

I drive by there all the time. They did the same thing to the house next door to me 10 years ago (then changed their mind and demolished it!) and it was fun to watch.

Was wondering if you got cracks in your walls from the lifting. Hope you enjoy all the space you’ll gain!

There was a house like this on Eastern Ave just north of 45th for over a year. It looks decent now, but I wonder about the structural integrity.
