Ladybug and the Turtle

  • Post author:

It sounds like a children’s story doesn’t it? Maybe someday it will be, the touching story of two designs, painted on intersections in a little neighborhood called Wallingford.

The Ladybug up at 49th and Burke is getting some company this weekend: a group of neighbors led by Bill Lindberg around Interlake Ave N and N 41st St will be painting a turtle designed by Rachel Marcotte in their intersection. The mural is funded in part by the city’s Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund and coordination assistance was provided by SDOT’s Neighborhood Traffic section. Says their press release:

During the work on Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29, the intersection will be closed from 9 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m. each day. In order to prepare the “street canvas,” on Saturday the street will be pressure washed, brush scrubbed and then the design will be chalk out-lined. On Sunday the artwork will be re-chalked, painted and dried. At least 50 neighbors are expected to lend a hand to the work effort.

Stop by and say hi. You can say you were there “when”!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
