Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

There are shelters. I hope you gave him addresses.

When I was at QFc a trio had a large stand/table with info against the president.I am sad to see that they took this holiday to try to upset folks.

I’ve been a professional social worker since 1993 and have participated in several coalitions/groups to assist/suport people who are homeless. Statistically there is a population of people who prefer being under the bush instead of in a shelter, particularly if they struggle with psychosis, social anxiety and of course post traumatic stress disorder in all of it’s manifestations. Substance abuse and alcoholism adds to the challnges of staying in a shelter were there are rules. When I think about where I’d hole up if I were homeless in Wallingford. I’d sleep somewhere warm in the daytime where I might not be asked to move from, cat naps in accessable bathrooms like at the library, 45th St. Clinic. Take my donated coffee to Tully’s or S.Bucks and drink it there or at a bus shelter. If I had a little money, I’d get a cheap meal at Taco Time and hang out there. I might hussle enuf to ride the bus with heat and sleep on the bus for as long as possible. Then at night I’d stay awake and cruise around on foot, or find a warm bush to crawl under, cover myself with a plastic tarp and sleep with whatever peace I may be able to muster. That said, I’m grateful I have a fairly warm apartment, warm food and a warm bed that cost me as much as a used car. If I died today, I’d be at peace. Happy Thanksgiving to Wallywood! I love you all!

Sometimes my wife and I grab a pre-made sandwich on the way out from QFC, seems to go farther than a cup of coffee and is roughly the same price. The gentleman have always been appreciative as well.

Someone who was NOT appreciate just now was a man trying to sell a spare change newspaper in front of the defunct payday loans. My wife politely apologized and said “No thank you, we don’t have any money on us.” He then proceeded to yell at us as we walked away from him all the way to Dick’s.

A sure fire way to make us think twice about those sandwiches 🙁

right.. its Thanksgiving and uncommonly cold.Solid Ground was closed the last 2 days. Starbucks was completely full. Other normally used places fo rheat will be closed tomorrow. taco time would be ok for a bit.

Shelters get filled in very cold weather when they dont normally because people know they have to get warm.

There are also doorways and a few places people may sneak in an dget locked in for the night – churches, gas stations, libraries.. all have potential.. there are some vacant houses and we have a homeless shelter right in Wallingford- a need to remain alive when it is so far below freezing..

Totally agreed. My point was just that yelling expletives and making my wife feel threatened doesn’t really make us want to help let alone even consider lending out our basement or garage.

Thank you for including Michael as part of the fabric of our neighborhood.

Was the person selling Real Change a badged seller? Every Real Change vendor I’ve dealt with (especially in Wallingford) who sports a Real Change badge has been polite and appreciative whenever I purchased a paper or just smiled and said hello.

I am not trying to refute you Alex. I hate the yelling stuff. I am saying the shelter info is mor erelevant and important NOW in this cold.

I will add, howeever, that in 2000, it took a year to get one Real Change seller moved as he did a lot of yelling; fascinated on my Oregon Ducks sweatshirt and called me names regularly. RC supported him in his space as Wallingford QFC spot is a highly desirable one and is assigned through seniority.
