Money Store No More

  • Post author:

New construction is proceeding furiously on the (former) Money Store at Corliss Ave. N. and N. 45th St.

Thursday morning, a crew was out digging,  laying new sewer line and “capping off” pipes under the former site of Crazy Beans.

I spoke to Jason who said they are prepping the building for a new coffee shop (yes, more coffee).

It was refreshing to see the old den of exploitation coming down and something new taking its place.

Adam Simon, the developer, says:

Uptown Espresso is opening up a new store in the former Payday Loans space.  With the abundance of parking on site, it will provide Wallyhood residents with a combination of Seattle’s famous artisan coffee and drive-up convenience.

Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Would this space be big enough for the farmer’s market? It’s certainly central enough.

Thank goodness. I have seen several check cashing places go out of business in recent months. Couldn’t be happier to see them go. These places are legal loan sharks that take advantage of people who are poor managers of their own money. I wish they were illegal.

    More coffee?
So many coffee and express shopping places went under here!

What will help this busines ssurvive? Muddy Cup just opened 3 blocks away!

ANYTHING is better than a Check Cashing place. People are lazy and parking is sparse there, so it may actually succeed. Now to get rid of that horrific Taco Time building next door. It really is monstrously ugly. And the food sucks. And it’s overpriced (for how bad it is – I never thought there could be sub-Taco Bell food, but there it is. Mexifries? Seriously).

Bummer for Muddy Cup! Still, I have to echo the other commenters in saying that I’m glad the check-cashing place is gone and the site isn’t vacant.

I’m really happy so many people here in Wallingford have, high paying jobs, excellent health and home owner’s insurance, have never gotten sick, had a sick child, had their car break down, or had something stolen from them and not been able to pay the bill. It must be nice to be making more than minimun wage and have credit cards to handle unexpected emergencies. Not everyone is as lucky as you are. Be grateful for what you have. There are lots of people in Wallingford who aren’t so lucky. They are not poor money managers they are just poor. Check cashing places do charge exorbitant intrest but they are life savers for people without credit cards or friends and family to borrow money from when emergencies happen. Where will they go now? I’m surprised to see such rancor for a business.

Thank you, Irish. Not that I am a fan of payday loan places, however I have met many people who have needed that service just as you described. I remember thinking, “what? really?!”, and realizing it was my own arrogance and good fortune never to need that. There are many people living close to the edge, without the support many of us – in Wallingford, in this case – have. I too am glad it is gone, but understand that it will be a burden for some who needed it.
