Leaves, Leaves Everywhere

The problem with Fall is, well . . . leaves fall.

The helpful folks at Seattle Public Utilities are making this disturbing phenomenon easier to cope with, according to Wallyhood reader Alan, with two programs.

Firstly, in the month of November they will pick up extra yard waste bags at no charge, giving you no excuse to not get out there and rake them up.

They also urge you to keep an eye on your nearby gutters where they can drift and clog the openings.  The combination of a wet-leaf plug and heavy rain is not pretty!  If you want to ensure those drains are clear, consider their Adopt A Drain program complete with a very cute low-budget informational video (your tax dollars at work).

Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

If a storm drain is plugged below the grate, don’t try to unplug it yourself. Call the SPU hotline for plugged drains: 386-1800, then press 2.

You’ll need to provide the intersection where the plugged drain is located, and which corner.
