Wine Tasting

Quickie reminder: City Cellars will be hosting a free Wallyhood-reader only wine tasting at their shop (1710 North 45th St) tomorrow, Fri Dec 10th from 5 – 7 pm. It’s not too late to sign up to win a free bottle of win on our Facebook page, we’ll pick a winner mid-day Friday.

Michael has owned City Cellars since 1989. We wondered how he came by it:

We bought the store from Jeff Treistman. Jeff also owned the now defunct Bungalow Wine Café, also in Wallingford.  I was the wine steward at the Bungalow  and bought City Cellars when it became available in 1989.  I began my wine career in New Orleans in 1983 after graduating from college and have worked off and on in wine business ever since mostly in hotels in New Orleans, Chicago and Boston.  My wife got a job with Westin Hotels here in Seattle in 1994, and we have lived here ever since.  We live in neighboring Greenwood.

My interest in wine began at a very young age as my father was an avid wine collector and consumer and traveled extensively throughout Europe. In the early 1970’s, he bought a flat in Spain, and we spent most of our summers there. Our family followed the European practice of adding a very small amount of red wine to our water at dinner on special occasions starting at a young age.

If you want to learn more, perhaps you can ask him over a glass of 2005 Giribaldi Barbaresco on Friday.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
