Out of the Hat

  • Post author:

We got a call this morning from our neighbor Jenny (who, we are told, has neither a computer nor much interest in this whole “Internet” thing) letting us know she spotted a black rabbit hopping across her yard last night. Since they don’t tend to make it wild out this way, she wondered whether it had gone missing from someone who hadn’t intended it to hop off.

She didn’t collect it, but if you’re missing one, you may want to check in the area of Latona and NE 42nd.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

I also saw tracks up my sidewalk, on 41st. So cute…but didn’t see the bunny. My neighbor Ben came over and decided they were camel tracks…we both laughed and decided we should keep an eye out for any camels gone astray.

I’ve seen wild rabbits in Wally and Green Lake. They are out there, but look far different from the pet type bunnies.

I seem to remember the entire neighborhood being overrun by wild bunnies 5 or so years back when they were taking over Woodland Park and Green Lake. I would see them as far out as 50th and Latona hopping around in my front yard. Perhaps they are making their come-back.
