Hand Truckin’ @ Latona

  • Post author:

Yes, we know, the Latona Pub (6423 Latona Ave. NE) is solidly in Green Lake, not Wallingford. But wait, people, before you discard this story as irrelevant to our neighborhood, read on:

Hand Truckin’ @ Latona: A unique Earth Day celebration for beer lovers and supporting a more walkable community. Enjoy a beer and socialize with walking enthusiasts, pedestrian advocates and craft brew lovers. This event benefits Feet First, the only organization in Washington working to ensure there are walkable communities across the state. Your ticket gets you a Feet First pint glass and a big frothy mug of Two Beer’s limited edition Hand Truckin’ Wheat Ale. Prior to the event, volunteers will transport the ale 10 miles on foot from SODO to Greenlake in order to make this a zero-carbon event (call to be part of the great beer hike).

And there it is! Explain to us how you can walk from SODO to Green Lake without passing through Wallingford!

Hand Truckin’ is this Saturday Sunday, April 22nd 2pm- 4:30 pm. Tickets are $20

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Fermenting beer creates CO2. Generating power to chill beer creates CO2. Growing and cooking food to be eaten to fuel your 10 mile walk creates CO2. Calling this a zero carbon event is laughable.

That said, I want some beer.

Max, zero-carbon refers to not releasing new carbons by burning fossil fuels. The CO2 from fermenting beer, for example, is a conversion of carbon already in the atmosphere. Growing plants for food cycles carbon out of the atmosphere, to be re-released later.

As for the event, people would be eating and beer would be chilling anyway.

Wallingford will be represented in the Hand Truckin’ team by at least 3 people!

Oh, and it is on Sunday the 22nd, not on Saturday as mentioned in the post.
