Jordan April 18, 2010 Comments are off

If you’re out and about in Green Lake today (by the community center), be sure to check out the Pinwheel Wind Farm sponsored by Coolmom.org:

Joggers, dog-walkers and playground players will discover a wind farm near the playground at Green Lake between noon and 3 pm on Sunday April 18th. In celebration of Earth Day, CoolMom.org and The Sierra Club will create a mini renewable energy station comprised of hundreds of colorful pinwheels, handmade by children across Seattle.

Volunteers will be on-hand with supplies for making and installing more pinwheels throughout the afternoon. Passersby will be encouraged to …

Reminder: Beautify

Jordan April 17, 2010 Comments are off

Quick reminder: the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Operation Beautify Wallingford today, Saturday. Show at the Wallingford Center starting at 10 am to pick up cleaning supplies and get an assignment, spend some time beautifying the neighborhood, then return for a speech by Councilmember Mike O’Brien and neighborhood activist Cathy Tuttle, starting around 1:00 pm. The band, we understand, has been canceled, but the School of Oom Yung Doe will be high-kicking in style and there will be food and drink offered up by local businesses.

In a coordinated effort, the semi-fictitious East Wallingford Hot Tub Association will be …

Old Tweedy, New Tenant: Revealed

Margaret April 16, 2010 2 Comments

Back in March we reported the sudden appearance of photos pasted to the windows of the old Tweedy and Pop store.  For a month, now, all that we saw were photos of oriental rugs, with a caption that read, “Heirloom Rugs.”

Today, we saw two guys on ladders unrolling a large vinyl sign above the store front, and now the mystery has been solved, sort of.  Looks like the ‘hood is, in fact, getting a rug store soon.

We’ll keep you posted on their opening date.…

The Gas Man Cometh

Jordan April 16, 2010 18 Comments

Mark’s got the scoop on an old scam reappearing over on Aurora, with photos to boot:

I have seen this guy pulling this scam at the intersection of Aurora and Green Lake Way several times before, but when I happened to look out my window and see him parking his car in front of my house (about 3 blocks from his intersection) I had to take a closer look.  His gas gauge was on a half tank and was in great shape.  He did not like me taking his picture and hid for a little bit and then followed me …

Margaret April 16, 2010 Comments are off

Beginning this Sunday through Thursday, April 29, you can indulge in a sumptuous three-course dinner at Joule, Ivar’s Salmon House, Tilth, or Avila, for just $25.  It’s all part of Seattle Restaurant Week–a program launched by Seattle Restaurant Cooperative, a group of local top-notch restaurateurs.

“This event is a great way for people to get out and try new things and different places, without killing their pocketbook,” says Avila owner Jared Carpenter.

If you’re hankering for something outside the ‘hood, have no fear.  106 restaurants in Seattle and the eastside will be participating in this promotion, some even serving lunches …

Erin Leach-Kemon April 15, 2010 1 Comment

According to witnesses, there were several police cars outside of Dick’s tonight. One witness–who spoke with police around 9:30pm–tells us that a female bicyclist and car collided, and that an emergency crew was moving the biker onto a stretcher as he arrived at the scene of the accident.

We hope everyone’s okay. Please be safe out there, bikers and drivers!…
