Alterations and Reweaving: Mystery Solved

Margaret Margaret August 9, 2010 9 Comments

Wallyhood reader Chris snapped a pic as workers were loading sewing machines and other items onto a truck this afternoon.  He spoke with the landlord who was clearing out the building, and told him that Phyllis became very ill (stroke she thinks) and is in a home now.  As far as she is aware, all owners of  clothing that had tickets on it have been contacted.

Thanks for the update, Chris!

So sad! Phyllis has been a neighborhood icon since the 1970’s. Any idea where we might send a note or card?

Maybe because I work in the health field I have been taught to be more sensitive about patient privacy. But does anyone know if Phyllis wants her personal health information shared with the Wallingford community? I really don’t mean for this to come across as judging, but it seems like before sharing hearsay (eg stroke she thinks) about someone’s health you should probably make sure that person wants their health information disclosed in such a public setting. HIPPA anyone? (There is the possibility that Phyllis gave her approval, but from what I read there is no indication of that)

    Agree with anon.

Have some respect for Phyllis. I have no problem with you reporting the building is being emptied, but let’s not publish pure speculation. This was probably her livelihood, did you at least make an attempt to contact Phyllis?

Judging by posts on this site, many people have tried unsuccessfully to contact Phyllis and appreciate the update. I hope someone’s able to convey our very best wishes to her.

It’s way easy to jump to conclusions based on a blog report. To me it seems much more appropriate to think in terms of human than HIPPA. It was my understanding that her landlord has shown great respect for Phyllis for a long time. They’ve had a business relationship that has apparently lasted for 40 years, if they weren’t friends, she and her landlord must have had some kind of a trusting relationship.

Its easy to imagine a property owner deciding to redevelop those properties (the same person also owns the two contiguous properties) as the area grew, but she didn’t. Possibly to protect Phyllis, I’m told. Maybe in informing the neighbors, her landlord was helping her friend tie up some loose ends Phyllis was unable to take care of for herself right now.

Sure – privacy and anon (sounds too p.c. to me).
I think seems reasonable to that “Phyllis became very ill (stroke she thinks) and is in a home now” is shared with her neighbors. Many of us wondered it she died, was ill (but coming back), was ill enough to have to retire, died or went to Fiji. It isn’t like the poster said she had a specified illness. I agree with “iyqtoo” – we’re concerned neighbors – not just some passersby.
It will be sad not to see her working away as I walk by with the dog . I only used her services once on a tear on a suit pant leg – it looked like nothing had ever happened. Quite a skill!
It will be interesting what happens with the property and how that will impact the restaurant on the same property.

Issues of privacy aside, I want to add all my best to Phyllis, who was a fixture on the corner for as long as I can remember.

Phyllis is a good person – and a part of this neighborhood.

    Let’s hope for the best!

So where can I get my suit reweaved in the area now? Suggestions?!? Everyone around here pointed me to her, and she was awesome.

Sorry Phyllis, I hope you are not in pain and being well cared for.
PC crowd, serious? It’s actually HIPAA, and it does not apply to bloggers.
