Green Halloween 2010

Shannon October 18, 2010 4 Comments

It’s that time of year to start planning your ghoulish Halloween events. Get in the Wallingford spirit and make it a Green Halloween?  This year Wallingford has made it easy for our community to partake in this nationwide phenomena.  Green Halloween will be occurring locally at Wallingford Center and other surrounding businesses, Sunday, October 31,  from 3-5pm.

It will be easy to spot the businesses involved, as they’ll have Green Halloween signs posted in their windows.  Businesses that are contributing to Green Halloween will be handing out healthy goodies or recyclable/reusable toys. Parents who want to join in on the green fun are being urged to use recycled trick-or-treat bags and recycled or used costumes.

Local Merchants Currently Signed Up:

  • Izilla Toys
  • Fabric Crush
  • Crackerjack Contemporary Crafts
  • 4 Your Eyes Only Optical
  • Bad Woman Yarn
  • Paron’s Closet
  • Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy
  • Mud Puddle Club Photography
  • Amita – The Art of Gifts
  • Whole Foods (Which will be present at Wallingford Center to sponsor Green Halloween)

The non-profit organization Green Halloween began in the Seattle area in 2007 and since then has become a national trend. In efforts to make Halloween healthier and better for the world, Corey Colwell-Lipson a mother of two, contacted her local Whole Foods Market hoping to get others onboard. As soon as the idea was proposed, Green Halloween began to rapidly spread and is now transforming Halloween into a much safer and green holiday.

According to the Green Halloween Organization:

Green Halloween is a community movement.  There is plenty of room for anyone who wants to get involved–from parents who want to gather support in their neighborhoods, to schools that want to turn their existing celebrations green, to companies who want to show their support by aligning themselves through sponsorship…The possibilities are truly endless.

You can easily participate in Green Halloween by handing out healthier snack options or toys at your home.  Let’s help spread the word and get our neighbors and friends together to support Green Halloween.  Along with participating in the activities offered at Wallingford Center, there are also local Wallingford merchants, which offer gently used Halloween costumes and gear:

  • Kids on 45th
  • Paron’s Closet
  • Alphabet Soup

Happy Green Halloween, Wallingford!

ghouls and ghosts of all ages enjoy getting colored pencils and choosing a favorite color. We offer ours in a black coffee mug.
