The Animals Among Us

Margaret Margaret November 20, 2010 11 Comments

There’s been some chatter in the Forums this week about some of our furry friends, and one fowl (who lived) among us.

First off, Magpiegirl tells us that she found a dead chicken in her back yard last weekend, on 35th and Densmore.  She adds, “We’ve seen raccoons in our yard before and recently chose not to have chickens because of that. Our neighbor’s coop one street up is fine so far and they are keeping their hens safely in the coop at night.”

Brooke posted information about a brown cat hanging around 36th and Densmore, adding that “It was having a major dispute with our neighbors’ cat and it was getting dark, so it was hard to see well. Brown, with darker tabby markings on face and front legs but its body was a smokey brown with no markings–hair may have been ticked with black? White whiskers seemed very noticeable for some reason. Didn’t look to be small or young–was similar in size to the neighbors’ adult male cat. I did not see a collar, but it was getting dark so I may have missed it.”

Louie06 reports that his wife and small dog were victims a pit bull attack at the 7-11 on Stone and 46th on Monday.  The dog was bitten and his wife was knocked to the ground, suffering a concussion and bruises.  Both are okay now, but he cautions readers to be on the lookout for the pair of pit bulls that are frequently tied up there.

And finally, neighbors jbfox and latonajack reported an elderly dog, who was often found wandering around Latona and 56th.  The dog was brought to the Seattle Animal Shelter and was identified as “Daisy”, but because no one has claimed her, she’s now available for adoption:  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17924717.

We were woken up by loud clucking from our chicken coop a couple of nights back: when we flipped on the lights, we found two raccoons crawling all over our coop, swatting through the wire. The coop stood up to the assault without a scratch, but there were some flustered feathers, to be sure.

Bagley and 38/39th. We have seen a lot of raccoons all throughout the fall. We have even seen them out during the day. They don’t seem to be afraid of much which isn’t good.

Oddly, I saw a confused acting, rather large raccoon on 45th street near the Chevron Wed night, about 7pm. It seemed to have been in the alley & was trying to figure out how to cross 45th!

Chris, I saw another raccoon there about a year ago…it was daylight, and he was in the alley between Kitaro and Molly Moon and he had a huge gash on his hind quarter. He turned around, looked at us, and hissed. I often wonder between the tasty snacks in our composts bins and the chickens, they’re getting bolder.

About a block from Tutta Bella: Lately I’ve been seeing one particular raccoon that does not walk on one of its hind legs, the leg doesn’t even make contact with the ground. Margaret, I wonder if this is the one you mentioned that had the huge gash.

    ‘rather large raccoon’

I think raccoons only come in two sizes – awwww-isn’t-it-cute-baby-size and holy-$h!t-look-at-that-thing.

It’s possible, DEPagliaro — the one I saw looked as though it could eat a small child with the greatest of ease.

oh I’m livid! I have found that dog more then once and even went and left a note on the owner’s door when I heard it had been taken to the shelter. The fact that anyone would be so callous about such a sweet sweet girl is absolutely beyond me. People like that deserve to be shot.

In the last few months a very beautiful, very large gray cat has showed up on Thackeray between 43rd and 44th. No tags. I am told that it may be a pure bred Coon Cat[?] This affectionate cat spent an afternoon with me while I gardened, hung out by the front door so that it was not so easy getting in without it. I saw it again last week — the cat was crossing the road in the dark, hurrying to make friends with the neighbors walking on the other side.

I am concerned that this beautiful cat is out and about with or without tags. All things being equal, SOMEONE is bound it take it home. So if you own that cat, I hope you read this and take care to keep it with you.

Our dog got attacked by a raccoon in our back yard about two weeks ago. Luckily it was a juvenile and between my beating on the raccoon and my dog fighting back, everybody was separated and survived. There do seem to be a lot of raccoons this year….

I have two cats down on 37th and Densmore and recently they’ve been getting in fights with some other cat outside, which we haven’t been able to identify. I found a claw lodged in one of my cat’s fur the other night! Not sure if it’s this brown cat or not..
