Honey So Sweet

Jordan Jordan November 29, 2010 13 Comments

We had a good year beekeeping in Wallingford this year: 16 gallons of honey, weighing in at 180 lbs. Perhaps it was our new set-up (which you can read all about on our newly revived beekeeping blog, Hive Mind Honey) or just the bee gods smiling on us.

We don’t sell our honey, but if you want a jar, there is a way: as we did last year, we’re giving a pint jar Wallingford’s own Hive Mind Honey to the first dozen people who donates $50 or more to Family Works, our favorite Wallingford-based charity.

Family Works operates a food bank, provides parenting support for teens and low-income families, job-hunting support and lifeskills counseling, all the kinds of things that help people raise themselves out of the cycle of dependence. We’re so grateful to Jake Weber (the director) and the crew over there for making so many lives better, this is the least we can do to help.

If last year is anything to go by, these 12 jars will go quickly, so if you want one, move fast! Leave a comment on this post saying you’re in, then head over to Family Works donation page to make your donation directly to Family Works (feel free to make it for more than $50, if the spirit moves you).

In addition to making a great topping for toast or holiday gift, local honey is reputed to help with allergies, and this is very local: bees will typically travel a mile or so to collect pollen and nectar, so if you’ve got flowers in your backyard, odds are some of them made it into this honey.

If you see 12 people have already dibbed in below, that means you’re too late for this round! But don’t worry, we’ll have more give-aways as the year goes on. Once the quota is filled, we’ll get in touch with you individually to arrange for drop-off / pick-up.

THANK YOU to Hive Mind and to everyone making a donation to the food bank and resource center, indeed a sweet gesture! I’d love to give you a personal thanks, so come on by for a visit and a tour and I’ll make you a cup of tea to go along with that honey. 1501 N. 45th – ask for Jake.

2 more and this is a done deal (as well as an ongoing good donation idea) . . . l-o-c-a-l, like we all talk about. A great partnership between Wallyhood and Family Works . . .

Did I make it? Thanks Nancy, and Hive Mind, and of course FamilyWorks who go way back and helped out with the kid activities during the Wally Playfield design meetings back in the 90’s. A great neighborhood resource. Hi Jake!
