Seattle Hand Drummers Meetup

Chris Witwer January 7, 2011 4 Comments

Years ago in Austin, Texas, I rented an apartment way too close to the University of Texas.

Some of my very young neighbors enjoyed organizing drum circles.  They’d gather up some friends, some drums, and lots of beer.  Then they’d head to a highway underpass with fantastic acoustics and drum away.  I regret now that I never joined them, mostly out of fear of being the only adult present during the debauchery (a fear pretty much  confirmed the night they set our apartment building on fire after a post-drumming drunken barbecue).

Anyway, I do wish I could’ve heard that drum circle.  How’s this for a second, but more sober, chance?  This Sunday, there will be an afternoon drum circle at Gas Works where the acoustics may not be quite so cool, but the view can’t be beat (get it?  BEAT!).

  • What: Seattle Hand Drummers Meetup
  • When: Sunday, January 9th.  1:30pm
  • Where: Gas Works Park, in the sheltered area if it’s rainy.
  • Cost: Free.  Bring a drum or something to make drumming noise with.  Or share with someone who brought two drums.

You can read more about it here.  Or just show up.

Maybe you will tell us of your experienc eleading a drum circle.??

Also I was inthemeetup group on meetup.. and events were posted with no location.. in my opinion then.. not a warm welcome or very organized hosts.
Sorry if this soundslike a slam.. voice of experience.

I don’t know about you, but if I was going to hand drum in an open and echoing space like Gas Works, i’d have to assume there will be repercussions. Get it? RE-percussions?

    well, whatever..
I asked what the background of the person leading this was.. and there is NO answer.
I already was a member of a meetup about this topic.. which did not list their location. Sorry, Charly I have a not so great feeling about the communication skills…now those may only be done by drum beat.. t dee dee dum. My life is busy and I have many drumming friends who I know have technical skills, great passion, ethics, and communication skills;creative souls who can also answer questions and have a lovely style of inclusion.
