April is here! (O.k., officially, it’ll be here tomorrow). Time to break out that spring jacket (the one with the hood and zip-in liner in case the temps dip ) and get outside to enjoy all the lovely colors of spring (set against the dull gray backdrop). I’m not a big fan of spring, can you tell? Used to be a big fan. BIG FAN. Can’t stand it now, because it’s when I suffer the most from allergies and I’m forced to stay indoors until whatever the heck is blooming stops and I can breathe more freely. But hey, don’t …
What in the Wallingford
You know what this neighborhood needs? More gargoyles. You can never have too many gargoyles, in our opinion.
Last week’s What in the Wallingford contest photo was pretty easy to recognize as a gargoyle, but we had lots of guesses as to which gargoyle it was. As it happens, it’s on a house on the corner of NE 54th and 1st Ave NE. Sadly, it seems that whoever lives in that house is not a Wallyhood reader, as nobody responded (correctly) “that’s the gargoyle on MY house”.
Congratulations to Jimmy A, selected randomly from amongst the correct answers submitted. Jimmy, …
Not A Number Raffle for Japan
With the move to their smaller space completed, and the store reopened, Not A Number owners Kara Ceriello and Jon DeLeeuw enlisted members of their Kids Club to raise funds for stranded families in Japan through ShelterboxUSA.org. Many Wallingford businesses have donated all sorts of goodies for the cause, and Not A Number will hold a series of daily raffle drawings for prizes beginning this Friday, April 1 at 7pm—-both in-store and online through their website: NotANumberGifts.com.
For the past five years, the Not A Number Kids Club has been doing all kinds of good deeds in Wallingford–from raising money …
Rubber Chickens
This Friday, April 1st is just another day for some; but for others, it’s April Fools Day. For Archie McPhee, Friday marks The Great Rubber Chicken Giveaway. That’s right folks, the first 100 people who come in to Archie McPhee this Friday will get their very own rubber chicken. I happen to think this giveaway is highly appropriate for Wallingford since we’re friends of the fowl, and so I hereby proclaim that our neighborhood mascot is the chicken, be it rubber or real. Who’s with me?
Scurry on over to Archie McPhee (1300 N. 45th St.) this Friday. The store …

Summer Theater
Not one, but two, yes count them, two opportunities for you or yours to strut the stage, blink into the limelight and chew the scenery this summer.
First, the Seattle Public Theater (on Green Lake) is seeking interns for the summer. Kenna Kettrick writes:
Are you between the ages of 14-25, and interested in teaching or directing theater? We have an internship for you!
Interns work with our professional teaching artists, with younger children’s camps or older students’ multi-week productions. Internships can range from assisting camp teachers to assistant directing or dramaturgy for plays.
Most internships do not offer a …
Growing “Your Farm in the City”
Imagine acquiring the power to produce your own food. Boom! Veggies over here. Bam! Herbs over there. Wham! Strawberries! Zap! Fresh-laid eggs, coming right up!
Most city-livers are so distant from the sources of what they eat that this seems like magic. But in her new book Your Farm in the City, Lisa Taylor of Seattle Tilth explains that starting an urban farm is no mystery, but rather something deeply satisfying that we can all do. Meet Lisa, learn about the book and get a signed copy this Thursday, March 31st at 7 PM at the offices of Tilth in …
