Let’s talk about the weather

Margaret Margaret March 16, 2011 1 Comment

Want to know the exact current temperature outside?  Normally, you’d be able to look up the local weather–but local usually means what the current temp is at Sea Tac or Boeing Field.

Well, thanks to reader Rob C., we can now pinpoint the exact temperature right here in Wallingford. Rob wrote in the Wallyhood Forums,

For Xmas I got one of them geeky home weather stations, and it’s been working fine for several months now – it’s even online, so you can see what’s happening in the ‘hood, like if you’re away on vac or something (not really so useful if yer already here, perhaps).”

Anyway, there are three online aggregators of such stuff that I’ve registered with. Check ’em out:

I like Weather Underground the best; nice summary and graphics:

(Amanzi in the Forums added that “The weather underground map is great:
http://www.wunderground.com/auto/wxmap/WA/Seattle.html. On the menu top center, click on the precipitation tab, and then click the play icon. Zoom in for Wallingford, and watch the rain come and go, and plan a dry walk or ride.)

FindU I, er, find kinda unimpressive, dunno why:

And finally, PWS Weather has a nice presentation:

I was kinda surprised to see that I’m the only Wallingfordian doing such a thing. Who’dathunk?

Rob also told me that he’s got his system rigged with an alarm, so that if we get more than a half an inch of rain within 12 hours, he can check to see if his basement’s flooded.  “It woke us last Sunday at 3AM, but all was well.”

Thanks for the cool little service there, Rob!
