Double (XX) Fest

Chris Witwer April 2, 2011 Comments are off

Stone Soup Theatre announces The Double (XX) Fest, a festival of plays written and directed exclusively by women, April 7 – April 24th.

And no, get your head out of the gutter. I said DOUBLE X (XX) as in DNA, chromosomes & all that.  I did not say triple X,  cheeky monkey.  The (XX) Fest continues in the tradition of the now-defunct Mae West Fest, which ran for nearly a decade.  But the (XX) Fest goes a step further. It’s a longer version of the 14/48 fest popular on college campuses.

Between April 7th & April 24th, the DownStage program will showcase fully-staged, one-act plays.  The UpStage program will offer 6pm readings every Thursday through Saturday night, except the 16th. There will be a writer’s workshop for people interested in working with the festival’s playwrights.  One New York playwright has already chosen a specific location theme for her writer’s workshop.  Guess what the location is?  The TROLL!

The festival will include, according to Stone Soup’s PR Manager, Carolynne Wilcox, the first ever 24-hour, all-female playfest anywhere, ever! History will be made in Wallingford when nine actors, three directors, three playwrights, and two techies work together to write & perform an original play in 24 hours.  They’ll pull a theme out of a hat, props will be set ahead of time, and they’ll be asked to incorporate a specific prop into the play, then bam! Off they go, creating a play to be performed at 10pm, Saturday April 16th.  Cool!

During the first two weekends of the festival, attendees will vote and select the best productions to be featured in the “Best of the Fest” the final week of the program.

The Double (XX) Fest runs from April 7 to 24 at Stone Soup Theater (4029 Stone Way N). For ticket prices, schedules, and additional info, go to: www.stonesouptheatre.org.
