Muddy Cup Closure

Margaret Margaret December 22, 2011 19 Comments

If you’ve tried to get your usual morning coffee at A Muddy Cup these last few days, you’ve no doubt seen the sign on the front door indicating that they’re closed until further notice.

We contacted owner Sarah Dolezal who explained that she’s going through some “serious health issues” right now. Her partner, Mathew, is taking care of her while she’s down for the count. She did say, though, that they’ll reopen after New Year’s.

Sarah also told us that they’ve been receiving some threatening notes at the store. “I just want the hate and threatening notes and spit on the building to stop,” she wrote.

I can’t say I blame her.

Threatening notes? WTH? There’s other coffee 1/2 block away, and I don’t know of any other reason to hate on them. Hope Sarah heals quickly & that Matt is getting what he needs too.

What the hell is wrong with people? When did it become OK to threaten and hate so much?

I really hope that Sarah and Matt are back soon and that they can focus on how much many people love The Muddy Cup and not on all of the hate.

Seriously? Now I really want to know what the heck they’re being threatened about?

I mean, sure, I was upset that it took him so long to finish the back patio, but.. (no, not really =) )

Get well soon! I can’t fathom why people would be hating on the Muddy Cup…

Really? Hate letters and spitting? Come on people! This is a small business, they run it by the skin of their teeth. They have tried in the past to have someone to cover when this happens but every time they’ve tried, the person has not been reliable and so they don’t have anyone to trust to do that because they can’t afford another regular employee. Why are people being cruel? It does suck to go there and find out they are not open, believe me, that’s happened to me before. But a small business only has so much wiggle room and if there is a death in the family or a person that’s very sick, what else can they do?

Get well soon Sarah (and Matt)! I will be back in as soon as I can be after New Year. I just wish my work schedule allowed me to visit and hang out there more often. Blessings!

We were in the Muddy Cup for the first time a couple of weeks ago – it is a charming little shop. Get well soon, Sarah. We’ll be back when you are. And hopefully whoever the mentally ill individual/s is/are will get the help they need.

only been there once… but i’m baffled by the hate mail and aggression. the Wallingford area is really undergoing some changes these days. I know i’m more on guard as a pedestrian than I was a year ago. baffling and sad. get well soon!

If you are comfortable sharing what the “hate” is all about, perhaps the people who are your patrons and supporters might be able to formulate a support response.

I’ve never been into the shop before but drive by it all the time and this little piece of disturbing news reminds me to support what’s valuable, like good coffee, community and small business. Its on my calendar to stop in after the new year! I look forward to it 🙂

I agree with Jon’s idea of formulating a support response. I haven’t met one hateful person while i’ve lived here in Wallingford, and it’s absolutely false that people living here don’t support small businesses. My husband and I are in the Occupy Seattle outreach group, and we’ve recently found support from the Muddy Cup in our movement to support local businesses. Sending healing thoughts their way.

I hope Sarah gets well soon, and both her and Matt get some much needed downtime and enjoyment of the holidays. I think I can safely say on behalf of your loyal patrons, we’ll be back after the New Year.

Anyone who gets that hot-headed over a coffee shop closure should be spending their coffee funds on therapy instead.

Hope you’re feeling better, Sarah. Our thoughts will be with you, we’re looking forward to the day you reopen the coffee shop.

I’ve tried to imagine what in the world’s not to like about the Muddy Cup and can’t come up with a single thing! You & Matt have a really nice little place in there. I hope you know how far those of us who love your store outnumber those turkeys who wrote notes.

    Hate mail? Threats? Really!?!

Sarah and Matt are awesome, and grabbing a coffee at Muddy Cup before grabbing my bus to work every morning has always been an awesome experience.

I knew Sarah had been having a rough time lately, but didn’t know it was that bad. Get well soon, and kudo’s to Matt for taking care of her!

Oh no. They were both the sweetest people whenever I went in. I hope everything works out. They were great for a bright moment of morning conversation or a corner to curl up in.

Sorry to hear Sarah’s sick! I really dig Muddy Cup. I don’t get coffee that often, so I only make it in once in a while. They’re always really nice when I’m there. Get well!
