A Gingerbread House on Kite Hill

Imagine taking a walk to Gas Works Park and finding a life-sized gingerbread house perched atop Kite Hill. The roof is tiled with chocolate snaps and festooned with gumdrops! The eaves are dripping with snow-white frosting and, wow! Look! There are people climbing on the steps of the house to enjoy its sugary goodness! Just thinking about it brings out the kid in me. But alas, it’s only a camera trick, though a marvelous one created by photographer Tracie Howe. It never fails in my house on Christmas Day — either I’ll need some random ingredient for dinner, or we’ll be out of “x” (dog food, milk, or heaven forbid–wine) and my poor husband will be sent out on a quest in the middle of the day. So, to make my life (and hopefully yours) easier, here’s a list of stores and whatnot that will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including the most important among life essentials: coffee places.

Missing Cat, Ruby

Julie wrote to tell us that her family’s cat, Ruby, is missing. If you see the cat, please call the number below:

Our beloved black cat Ruby, a 1.5-year old female, is missing as of yesterday (12/21). She has a white blaze on her chest and one white paw. Although she is an outside cat, she almost always comes in at night and has never been out for this long. Kalakala sold for a buck?

When my husband and I were planning our wedding in 1999, we considered having our reception at the Kalakala. Back then, the iconic streamlined vessel was berthed on Lake Union, still somewhat structurally sound and open to the public. I had grandiose visions of an art deco-themed party.

In the end, we discovered that the Kalakala was only open for fundraising efforts, so we bagged that idea. But we hoped that someone would host a New Year’s Eve party on the old ferry so that we could enjoy that little piece of history. Unfortunately, the Kalakala’s fundraising parties were shut …
