Wallingford teens hold a food drive

Margaret Margaret August 2, 2012 1 Comment

Grace and her friends with about 240 pounds of donated food last year.

Last year, when Grace and her sister and mom read Nicole Brodeur’s piece in the Seattle Times, “For some kids, cuts at nonprofit mean fewer meals”, it spurred an idea: “The article got my sister and I thinking, and decided with some friends to organize a food drive,” Grace wrote to me in an email. “We put up posters around the neighborhood and gave out over 100 flyers. We want everyone to participate in this food drive.”

The food drive was such a hit that Grace and her pals donated 240 pounds of food to local food banks, including FamilyWorks. Now, they’ve decided to turn this into an annual summer event, and they’re kicking off this year’s food drive next week. Grace writes:

If you got a flyer on your porch we will be around on Monday, August 6th at 1:00 PM to pick up food; you can just leave it on your porch. If you did not get a flyer you can drop off food on the porches of the following addresses:

3727 Burke Ave. N
3634 Woodlawn Ave N

Grace, an Ingraham High School student, also challenges other kids and families in the neighborhood to organize food drives routinely to help those less fortunate. Every little bit helps.

No surprise, Grace and her friends are some of the kindest and compassionate young people around! Nice job ladies!
