Thank You Wallingford for the Cleanup

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the May 2nd cleanup of the Wallingford 45th Street business district, as announced in Lara’s Wallyhood post on April 28th. Special thanks to Michael Dewar and Will Vagle for coordinating the effort and providing the participants with gloves, vests, garbage bags, and pickers from the City of Seattle Adopt a Street Program.

Judging by the turnout on a beautiful sunny day, as well as the pile of collected garbage, the effort can only be described as a rousing success. The fall cleanup has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd. Mark your calendars!

Interested folks can also participate in more frequent cleanups by joining the Sparkling Wallingford Society, organized by Carrie Johnson, as previously covered in Wallyhood.   The next Sparkling Society Cleanup is schedule for Friday, May 22 from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm.  Contact them to find out more.

Also, during the past Saturday cleanup, Wallingford resident and Historic Wallingford board member Ron Waldman asked: How many Wallingford volunteers does it take to remove 20-year-old pole banners along 45th Street?

Turns out, the answer is five: two brave souls willing to climb up a 14-foot extension ladder, two more to secure the ladder, and one to keep pedestrians out of harm’s way. These worn banners were originally a service project carried out by Meridian School students back in 2007. It was high time they were taken down, since they had become soiled and weathered over these past two decades.

Now that the banners have been removed, the path is clear for brand new ones to be raised. The new banners will celebrate the history of our Wallingford Parade, the longest-running Seafair parade in Seattle (75 years in 2027!). Thanks to the generosity of Blake Garfield, owner of Bedrooms & More, and local Wallingford artist, Cynthia Payne, new banners are being created, depicting parade posters from decades ago up through this year’s design.

We look forward to seeing the new banners installed by June, with the help of gracious volunteers. We invite the entire community to come out and celebrate our annual Wallingford Parade on Saturday, July 11th. See you there!
