Chow Down Hits the Ave Tomorrow

78 Restaurants, Lion Dancers, K-Pop, and a Fruity Pebbles Matcha Because, Well, U District

There are neighborhood street fairs, and then there are events that could only happen in the U District.

On Saturday, October 3, just up the street from our Wallyhood, the Ave will once again transform into a giant outdoor food court, cultural festival, and community celebration as the U District Chow Down & Street Party returns for its sixth year. Produced by the U District Partnership, the event invites visitors to stroll, snack, and explore with dozens of affordable food offerings and a full day of entertainment.

The headline attraction? Seventy-eight restaurants and businesses serving up $6 bites and drinks (See the full menu here). From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., attendees can create their own culinary adventure, hopping from one eatery to the next and sampling flavors from around the world without committing to a full meal.

But Chow Down isn’t just about eating.

For one day, University Way NE becomes a pedestrian playground. The Ave will be closed to vehicle traffic from NE 41st Street to NE 45th Street, creating room for music, performances, contests, shopping, and the kind of spontaneous people-watching that makes the U District one of Seattle’s most entertaining neighborhoods.

The festivities begin at 11 a.m. with the unmistakable thunder of taiko drumming. Throughout the day, lion dancers will weave their way through the crowd, the award-winning Roosevelt High School Jazz Band will perform, and visitors can jump into K-Pop dance lessons. There will even be a BTS lookalike contest, a detail that feels perfectly calibrated for a neighborhood where students, families, longtime residents, and pop-culture enthusiasts all collide.

And if you’re wondering whether the food itself will lean traditional or adventurous, consider one menu item already generating buzz: a Fruity Pebbles-flavored matcha. What could be more U District than combining centuries-old Japanese tea culture with a beloved Saturday morning cereal?

Beer gardens will also line portions of the street, giving attendees another excuse to linger between bites and performances.

For Wallingford neighbors, it’s an easy walk, bike ride, or quick trip across I-5 to one of Seattle’s liveliest annual celebrations. Whether you’re chasing the perfect dumpling, looking to learn a few K-Pop moves, or simply curious about what a Fruity Pebbles matcha tastes like, Chow Down offers plenty of reasons to venture into the U District.
