There are a couple of new fitness studios in the neighborhood! Wallingford already has a lot of fitness options, including well-loved studios like Aditi, Studio Evolve, Orangetheory, and Commune Yoga, as well as the big gyms Emerald City Athletics and the Bouldering Project. Now we also have Jazzercise, which recently opened in our neighborhood, and Coeur Pilates, which is opening soon.
Jazzercise
I was treated to a blast from the past while driving down 45th Street back in August. There, at the corner of Bagley—the former location of an occupational therapy clinic—was a massive sign reading “JAZZERCISE.” The studio was set to open on August 31. Having done Jazzercise in San Francisco back in the 1990s, I thought, “Why not give it a try?”
I signed up for a single class, which fit into my schedule a few weeks ago, called “Power Sculpt 60.” (Back in the day, there was just one class type, although we could choose a 60-minute or a 75-minute class.) I was greeted in the light-filled lobby by studio owner and instructor, Amy Williams-Derry, who introduced me to the other women lacing up their “inside-only” athletic shoes. The studio is large and bright, with most surfaces covered in a fresh coat of white paint. The new wood flooring—5,000 pounds of it, carried inside by Amy and her team—offers a clean, attractive place to work up a sweat, and emphasizes why inside-only shoes are required. Weights, bands, and mats are provided for the use of class participants.
The Power Sculpt class was intense but doable, and I dusted off my dance moves—chassés, relevés, and pliés. There were about 20 participants in the class, many of whom seemed to know each other. I came to discover that this studio has been operating for the past four years in a classroom at the Phinney Neighborhood Association, and Amy has now created her own space here in Wallingford. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Coeur Pilates
Further west on 45th, you may have noticed the signage papering the windows in the empty retail space next to Cedarhouse Flowers: “SEATTLE, WE CENTER opening soon.” The next window explains it: “Coeur Pilates.”
Founder Iva M reached out to Wallyhood in early September to share the details of the studio.
I’m Iva, founder of Coeur Pilates, a new boutique reformer Pilates studio opening at 1905 N 45th Street.
Coeur is our first location, and I created the concept after a career in tech and user-centered design, alongside my own background in Pilates. The studio is designed around small-group classes that combine the energy of group instructor-led Pilates with personalized guidance, creating a more personal experience within a community-focused setting.
The name Coeur means “heart” in French, and that idea of connection is a big part of what we’re building. Wallingford felt like the right place for our first studio because of how local, walkable, and neighborhood-driven it is.
We’re currently in the final stages of build-out and permitting and hope to open later this month. In the meantime, we’ve been building a local waitlist and starting conversations with other Wallingford and Fremont businesses around community events and collaborations.
A quick visit to their website states an updated opening date of November 9th, and they are currently accepting sign-ups for a sneak preview of Reformer Fundamentals workshops that begins next week before the studio officially opens to the public.
Iva is focused on creating a community-driven experience, using input from participants to build the direction of the studio, so it sounds like a great opportunity for beginners and experienced Pilates practitioners alike. Welcome Iva and Coeur!
