I have just learned of an exciting new Wallingford organization, Historic Wallingford.

A group of very enthusiastic Wallingford residents have developed this organization, had it incorporated as a non-profit entity in May 2017 and will orchestrate its official launch in January.

Why Historic Wallingford? In years past, local architects and historians led walks and tours in Wallingford to highlight our unusual concentration of architecturally significant buildings. Seeking to expand upon this, it was suggested after discussions with several noted Seattle historians, that a formal organization could best expand and carry the work forward – hence Historic Wallingford.

On April 5, 2017 the Wallingford Community Council hosted a meeting for renters, landlords and single-family home owners.  The meeting was put on by the Tenants Rights Bootcamp, a partnership between BE:SEATTLE and the Catholic Community Services Legal Action Center.  Devin Silvernail, Executive Director of Be:Seattle [email protected] conducted the meeting and Maureen Roat, Senior Staff Attorney for the Legal Action Center presented the legal aspects as well as answered questions from the audience.

A significant part of Mayor Murray’s Housing Affordability and Livability Agenda (HALA) was a community-based focus group process consisting of 170 members selected from over 800 applicants from all areas of the city (http://www.seattle.gov/hala/focus-groups). Last Tuesday’s Urban Village Community Design Workshop sponsored by the City of Seattle was a success!  Over 300 people attended the meeting to participate in a dialogue with a representative of Councilperson Rob Johnson’s office, the Office of Planning and Community Development, and the Office of Housing.  I will have to say that I was somewhat shocked and surprised that Councilperson Johnson did not show up for the meeting in that he missed a valuable opportunity to engage in a dialogue with his constituents about some pretty important and long-reaching zoning decisions.
