Get Ready for Gardening Season 2025 – Part II

Ellen Robinson April 21, 2025 Leave a Comment

Spring has rolled into Seattle in the form of cherry blossoms, daffodils, and a little bit of pollen in the air! This weather makes the gardener come out in all of us. While I enjoy digging around in my own dirt, perhaps you don’t have a lot of space or don’t think you have a green thumb? There are many food-related gardening opportunities in and around the neighborhood. Consider getting involved and supporting some great organizations. City Fruit

City Fruit’s mission is to harvest and steward urban fruit trees to support sustainable and equitable access to fruit. They work year …

January and new beginnings

Ellen Robinson January 26, 2025 1 Comment

The month of January is named in honor of the Roman god Janus, who is symbolic of beginnings and transitions. For many of us, January is a time of optimism, filled with resolutions and plans for the New Year.  Gardeners are optimists by nature and we commonly shrug off our failed harvests with a “Well, there’s always next year”.

Winter is a time of rest in the garden as our dark, cold, rainy weather does not support new plantings and the crops we have overwintered are few and far between. In her book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, Barbara Kingsolver called February …

Farewell summer harvests; Hello Fall plantings!

Ellen Robinson October 5, 2024 Comments are off

After visiting this weeks final Wallingford Farmers Market (in a torrential downpour), I found myself overjoyed at the amazing bounty our Seattle summers produce and I also find myself thinking ahead to the fall garden plantings.   While autumn in the garden is typically associated with “clean up”, it is not too late to get a few more crops in the ground to turn your kitchen garden into a near-year round harvest.

Yes, you can still plant a few more things before the darkness descends!

Greens: You may not get a lush baby lettuce harvest right now, you can transplant kale, …

Pollinators are Welcomed in Wallingford

Ellen Robinson July 22, 2024 1 Comment

I have noticed a lot of activity along the Burke Gillman trail on the north shore of Lake Union. Many mornings I have seen a group wearing orange safety vests digging, sawing or shoveling mulch. Then I found a few new signs highlighting a pollinator garden and that this project is supported by the Green Seattle Partnership.

I was able to speak with Eric Sterner, a Plant Ecologist who works for Seattle Parks and Recreation, who described the project as a collaboration between the City of Seattle, community groups, non-profits, businesses, schools, and thousands of volunteers, who work together to …

Art of the Table – Special Occasions and More

Ellen Robinson June 12, 2024 1 Comment

Wallingford has one of the best fine dining restaurants in Seattle in our midst at Art of the Table, 3801 Stone Way. The locally sourced, seasonal, ever changing tasting menu is one of my “go to” places to take out of town guests or celebrate a special anniversary or birthday, AOTT has a multitude of other offerings that can be enjoyed at any time.

This family owned restaurant has been operating in Wallingford for 17 years.  Husband and wife team Chef Dustin Ronspies and Shannon Van Horn have created an elegant, welcoming space where you can watch the work up …

Grow your own remedies

Ellen Robinson May 27, 2024 Comments are off

I have often said that herbs were my gateway drug to kitchen gardening. Thanks to the wonderful Wallingford Library, I can find more ways to expand my knowledge and my garden!

I recently stumbled across this book Backyard Pharmacy – Plants as Medicine, by Elizabeth Millard.  While she is based in Minnesota (with much different weather than ours – brrrr….) this is a great resource for growing, harvesting, and preparing herbal garden remedies.

With some newly repaired garden beds along my parking strip as an empty canvas I got to work researching medicinal herbs and creating a small “frontyard pharmacy” …

Plan for the Plants!

Ellen Robinson March 25, 2024 Comments are off

Spring is here!
Last week was the Spring Equinox and suddenly it seems like there is a lot to do in the garden! If you are looking forward to getting started with an edible garden this year, a little planning goes a long way.
Is it the right time?
While the PNW has a temperate climate and we can grow crops nearly year round, some plants like it hot and some like it cool. In your planting plan consider if what you are growing is a cool season crop like peas, lettuce or other greens, or a warm season crop.…
