B.F. Day Gets A New Playground

Margaret August 7, 2013 Comments are off

B.F. Day families will be treated to a new playground  on school campus this fall, thanks in part to Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, King County Parks, private donations, the Fremont community and Chamber of Commerce, and the B.F. Day PTSA. While construction officially began on August 1, the playground committee is seeking a few volunteers to help with the equipment installation during the weekend of September 14-15.

If you want to lend a hand, contact Kristin Anderson at [email protected].

Design Review Recap

Margaret August 6, 2013 58 Comments

Many thanks to Kristen, et al, who attended the Tully’s/Moon Temple Lot Design Review meeting on Monday night. Here’s a recap from Kristen:

I just returned to the meeting and it went amazingly well. I would guess there were 60-70 people there from the community, in a hot and stuffy room. The architects presented their designs (starting with an irrelevant presentation on the firm’s background and previous projects: malls, giant hotels, stadiums), the board asked a few questions and then the community commented (everyone who wanted to talk had a chance). I was impressed with how respectful and constructive the …

Free Trees From The City

Margaret August 5, 2013 Comments are off

Here’s a little tree trivia for you? What do Galaxy Magnolia, Tall Stewartia, Emerald Sunshine Elm, Mountain Hemlock, and June Snow Dogwood all have in common?

The answer is that they’re among 13 different types of trees that the city is offering for free through its Trees for Neighborhoods program, through Seattle reLeaf:

Seattle reLeaf’s Trees for Neighborhoods program is giving away free trees to Seattle residents. Through the program, participants receive up to four trees, free watering bags for each tree, training on proper tree planting and maintenance, and exciting workshop opportunities on topics like young tree pruning. Since …

Siblings Denied Enrollment at JSIS

Margaret August 2, 2013 59 Comments

Two Wallingford families have put out a “Call To Action” asking folks to join them in a protest/sit-in on the John Stanford Center grounds (not the school but Seattle Public Schools’ downtown administrative offices, 2445 3rd Ave S ) on Thursday, August 8 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The protest is in response to their incoming Kindergartners being denied assignment to their older siblings’ school, John Stanford International School (JSIS).

In a letter to the community, Parnel Lettunich writes:

Both the Lettunich and Cisero families submitted registration paperwork in a timely manner during Open Enrollment which would have secured their sibling …

Aurora Tour

Aurora Avenue North: vile but vital, yes? Whether you love it or hate it, Aurora still supasses, in my opinion, that lousy stretch of I-5 from downtown to Mountlake Terrace, in terms of efficiency.

If you’re a history buff and you’d like to learn a little about Aurora’s humble beginnings this Saturday, take a look at the following walking tour, offered through the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI).

A little north, but…Aurora!

Aurora: Life on Seattle’s Mother Road

Thousands of drivers use Aurora Avenue every day: it’s a vital traffic corridor. Yet few understand how a city street can …
