Meaningful Movie on 7/7 at 7!

Lynn Post July 5, 2017 1 Comment

This Friday evening, Meaningful Movies in Wallingford is showing the documentary Sustainable, providing food for thought on the future of agriculture.

From the website, Sustainable

weaves together expert analysis of America’s food system with the story of one remarkable farmer, Marty Travis, who is creating a future for his family and his farming community by adopting sustainable agriculture. The film examines the inter-relationships between the environment, economics and public health.

Dr. David Montgomery, a professor at the University of Washington and author of the recent book Growing A Revolution, will be at the event to provide commentary and …

School’s (Almost) Out for Summer!

Lynn Post June 24, 2017 6 Comments

With the end of the school year and that long-awaited but brief Seattle sunshine just around the corner, we thought it would be neighborly of us to offer some (mostly free!) family-friendly ideas for that small window of opportunity for sun lovers in Wallingford.

Hot Spots to Cool Off

With the closing of the school doors comes the opening of the many spray parks and wading pools in the Seattle area. The wading pool at Wallingford Playfield is one of the most popular spots in the neighborhood to cool off. Scheduled to open on Wednesday, June 28, the pool will …

Blue Star Blues

Lynn Post June 10, 2017 4 Comments

Most anyone who lives in Wallingford has surely been to the Blue Star Café & Pub, known for its extensive daily breakfast menu, casual dining atmosphere, and awesome rotating beer selection. Over the years, many regular neighborhood customers have had the pleasure of getting to know the man behind the breakfast: Leon Torrey. Back in November, Leon lost his nine-month battle with prostate cancer and passed away just before Thanksgiving.

On a quiet Sunday evening in early December, the restaurant closed for a private celebration of Leon’s life by his family, friends, long-time customers, and current and former staff, some …

Hit-Pedestrian Update & Fundraiser

Lynn Post June 8, 2017 Comments are off

Last month, not long after we posted an article about the difficulties and life-risking challenges of trying to cross N 40th Street, a pedestrian, who happens to be an employee of Irwin’s Bakery, was hit by a car in that vicinity. Fortunately, this was not a fatal incident! It was, however, a serious accident resulting in two broken legs. Although Rio is expected to make a full recovery, she will be out of work for up to five months.

Irwin’s is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday, June 21, 6 – 9 p.m. at the cafe to help raise money to assist …

This evening, Wallingford watering hole Al’s Tavern will be participating in a fundraising event for Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), a nonprofit organization that provides high-quality legal representation and other services to immigrants. Al’s, along with about a dozen other restaurants and bars from Magnolia to Mt. Baker, will be donating a percentage of all sales for the night to NWIRP.

Night Out for NW Immigrant Rights Project was organized by Katie Phoenix, who was compelled to take action after a series of ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) raids in South Seattle two weeks ago. Says Katie, “It really hit …

From Erotic to Exotic, Cubed

Lynn Post May 21, 2017 8 Comments

For those in Wallingford who have been missing the unconventional, obscenely whimsical concoctions of the Erotic Bakery, you will be happy to hear there is a viable replacement. Just a few doors west of where the iconic confectioner sold penis cakes and vulva treats for almost three decades, another unique, yet completely different (and G-rated!), style of bakery will open its doors on Tuesday, May 23.

With dessert and pastry creations that will appeal to a much broader audience, Cubes Baking Co. is a Mexican-style panadería with a twist: everything is cube-shaped! In true panadería fashion, the format will …
