Does your local store donate to Democrats or Republicans?

Susanna February 11, 2025 16 Comments

The recent inauguration may have some of us feeling helpless. One thing we can do to reclaim our power is to make conscious decisions on where we spend our money according to that company’s values. I have definitely found myself thinking “I will never give my money to that (GOP-aligned) company again!” I’m guessing many of you have had the same thought.

But did you know that companies that are right here in Wallingford make political donations? Using an app called Goods Unite Us (which I highly recommend), I’ve done a search of some of the larger chain stores we …

Pupusa Fundraiser at the Wallingford United Methodist Church this Sunday 2/9

Susanna February 8, 2025 Comments are off

The Wallingford United Methodist Church is having a pupusa lunch fundraiser this Sunday, February 9th, to raise money for an upcoming mission trip to El Salvador. WUMC has been working with Sister Parish for the last 25 years and is fundraising for another trip in March.

They are asking for donations for the pupusa meal. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Pupusas are a thick, savory griddle cake that are typically stuffed with a variety of fillings such as meat, cheese, beans, or vegetables. They are muy delicioso. Wallingford United Methodist Church is located at 2115 N 42nd Street. The …

Impact of proposed new zoning maps on Wallingford

Susanna October 28, 2024 12 Comments

Mayor Bruce Harrell has recently released proposed rezoning maps as part of the Comprehensive Plan updates. Interactive zoning maps can be found here, so you can look up what is specific to your block (that’s what we all want to know, right?). These draft maps are currently open for public comment before being up for review by the City Council in early 2025. Many of these zoning changes are required to be in compliance with Housing Bill 1110 (HB 1110), often referred to as the Middle Housing Bill, which was passed by the state legislature in 2023.

Wallingford’s “urban center” …

The Street Closure That Isn’t

Susanna April 10, 2024 41 Comments

As reported by Wallyhood back in December, the Department of Transportation has plans to add permanent planters and permanent signs supported by concrete bases to the Healthy Street closures along 44th and 43rd from Latona to Interlake. You know, those closures they did for the pandemic that never went away. The city plans on making those closures permanent. But should we?

I personally think they’re ineffective and a nuisance. But I wanted to know if I was the only one, so I did a Facebook poll on the Wallingford Fremont Community page. Of the 261 individuals that responded, 66% said …

Jenny Beauty Salon opens in Wallingford

Susanna December 19, 2023 Comments are off

Just in time to get beautiful for the holidays, a new beauty salon has opened up in Wallingford. Jenny Beauty Salon at 4501 Interlake Avenue North offers nail, face, and lash services. It has been opened by the same owners of Excellent Nails & Spa around the corner, a popular nail salon I’ve been to many times.

The new salon has both nail technicians and an esthetician. They can help you get your perfect holiday nails, and while you’re there they also offer waxing, facials and lash services. The staff is talented and friendly and the salon inviting, including a …

Small Business Highlight: JAS Corner Store

Susanna November 15, 2023 Comments are off

There’s a house on lower Wallingford Avenue that I’ve often admired. It was beautifully restored by JAS Design Build, whose office is across the street. JAS does excellent work restoring and rethinking old houses and I think we are fortunate to have them in the neighborhood.

I just found out that last December JAS quietly opened an adjacent corner store which is a charming extension of their impeccable aesthetic. It’s a little off the beaten path, about one block south of Union Saloon and across the street. I didn’t even realize it was there, and I’m guessing I’m not the …

Free extra yard waste pickup in November

Susanna October 28, 2023 Comments are off

During the month of November, Seattle Utilities will accept up to ten extra bags of yard waste from current customers. This is only for yard waste, discarded food items must still fit inside your bin. So after you have raked your leaves and let your dog or child jump in them a few times, you have the option to use your fallen leaves as compost in your garden or put out extra yard waste bags for the city to collect. But whatever you decide, please help keep fall leaves out of drains to reduce the risk of flooding. Because clearing …
