Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Commune Yoga Comes To Wallingford

Jordan August 24, 2019 1 Comment

There’s a new(ish) yoga studio in Wallingford, Commune Yoga (313 NE 45th St., conveniently located between Kate’s Pub and the American Mary weed shop). I say “new(ish)” because they opened back in May, and even then, it was strictly new, as much as “new to Seattle”: the original Commune Yoga was opened in Los Angeles, and the owners, Patrick Beach and his wife Carling, have migrated it up to Seattle.

Patrick Beach and Carling Harps, Commune Yoga’s co-owners

Before I let Patrick explain his journey from Wallingford to the wide world to Los Angeles back to Wallingford, let me note …

Graffiti Guy Caught Spray Handed (and other weirdness)

Jordan August 22, 2019 17 Comments

A few weeks back, Loretta confronted this guy tagging the northwest entrance to Meridian park with spray paint. She called 911, while fending off his implorings about the significance of his art. She says he left on a bike, with black backpack full of paint and an orange bucket.

Wallingford has some beautiful murals, as well as some ugly walls that could use a beautiful mural. If turban-man wants to express himself, I’d encourage him to contact an affable property owner and offer his services. Heck, I’ve got some spaces that need some …

Tuesday: Seattle Night Out

Jordan August 5, 2019 5 Comments

Tomorrow (Tuesday, Aug 6th) is the night (many of) you have been waiting for all year: Seattle Night Out. Starting around 5 pm, your neighbors will be blocking off the streets from traffic, setting up card tables for food, maybe even running a line out for a PA system.

Casseroles, salads (lettuce and fruit-focused), pizzas (meat and vegetarian and perhaps even gluten-free), desserts (brownies and home-baked cookies, I hope) will begin to appear, along with sodas (diet and regular), two buck chuck (red and white) and whiskey (hip flasks shared surreptitiously).

More importantly, your neighbors will be there, out on …

OK, what are you going to do? How about checking out Tilth’s Annual Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour, a self-guided, cross-city tour of your neighbor’s backyards, featuring their fine fowl and the elaborate edifices built for them. It’s happening today, Saturday, August 3 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tickets ($5 – $15) and maps can be picked up at the Good Shepherd Center, where Tilth has their office and garden.

Says they:

Seattle is a national hot spot for chicken coops and urban …

District 4 Candidates, Take 2

Jordan July 30, 2019 Comments are off

Last week, I invited the District 4 (that’s us, Wallingford!) Seattle City Council candidates to share their positions on two topics that have been impacting our community: homelessness and crime. On Sunday I tried to run the answers I received on one of the topics, but bungled the posting terribly, posting the right answers to the wrong questions, trying to fix it but still making mistakes. Sorry about that.

In the hopes of sorting it all out, I’m going to post their answers to the both questions below. Some of this will be a repost of Sunday’s article, but half …

District 4 Candidates on Homelessness

Jordan July 28, 2019 39 Comments

(Updated: I asked the candidates several questions, and posted the answer to the wrong question for all the candidates. I have corrected it below.)

I invited all candidates running for the District 4 Seattle City Council seat to share their thoughts on the crisis around homelessness that our city is facing, and offered to reprint their answers here. I heard back from Alex Pedersen, Emily Myers and Cathy Tuttle, who’s answers I share here.

(Reminder: Ballots must be in by Tuesday, August 6th. The ballot dropboxes will close at 8 pm.)

Question: There is a growing frustration in the neighborhood …
